Overcome the Fear of Farming and Get Started

This article was published in the January 2020 Issue of Ag Now Magazine. A digital magazine curated from a network of farmers and agriculture professionals. I shared my experience of becoming a first-generation farmer and gave encouragement to those who are considering a career in farming. This world needs first-generation farmers.

Overcome the Fear of Farming and Get Started by Kelli Lage

I grew up in a big farming area, however, I lived in town. I was never interested in farming. Each year in elementary school, my class and I took a field trip to learn about farm safety. I remember thinking to myself, “When am I ever going to need this information?” Someone’s having a laugh now, because then at 19 I met a farmer.

When I met Ryan I admired the hard work he did as a farmer, but it never crossed my mind as something I could do as well. However, as our marriage began, I watched him work and I was drawn in. Over time he’s shown me the beauty of planting something and watching it grow. Without him, I would have never discovered my passion for agriculture. However, I was scared to jump in. Ryan grew up watching his father and grandfather farm and learning from them. He had 23 years of knowledge packed into his head and at 19 I didn’t even know what an auger was.

Yet, I persisted and decided to dive in full force. I encourage you to do the same if you feel called to farm but haven’t started yet. There are many people like my husband who grew up eating, sleeping, and breathing the farm. And then there are those like me who are still learning something new on the farm each and every day and that’s okay. Don’t let the unknown or the unsure deter you, because this world needs first-generation farmers.
